Hump Day!! 4/8/25

My Day
Lots of meetings today, which means sitting on my butt. I hate that, but nothing I can do about it at work. I'll get my wiggles out later in the day. It's a chilly day, where are you sun?!?, so I did get a sugar free latte. Delivered. My hubby is the best. I did order some treats from a new site I heard about. Crave Clean Protein Bakery - I got the 6 chocolate craver box. This shop is based out of Miami and they list the nutritional information for all their treats. I'll let you know how delicious they are ASAP. Hopefully those sweet thoughts get me through my running for today.

My Food
Breakfast: Sweet Potatoes, Eggs, Mint Tea
Snack: nuts, sugar free latte, Ostrim stick
Lunch: spaghetti squash and meatballs - thank God for leftovers
Dinner - Chef has not let me know yet :)  Some meat and veggie for sure!

Wednesday - Woot Woot! 3/25

My Day
Today I got to go into Mason's school for his Patriot play today and I didn't wake up too sore. Win win! One of my big goals for the day is to not stress about maxing out my front squat. It's just another lift, another day, another movement that I can do. I know I'm stronger than the last time I did it, so that's that. I WILL be fine. Got a sitter for the last Open workout 15.5. I don't like bringing the boys if there are barbell movements that they could get in the way of. They like going to cheer, play in the giant tire, and see people.....just not always safe. Did the workout at home today, still a little sore from earlier this week. I did not stress about the front squat, almost to a fault. I just didn't have my head in it. Probably should not have done it, but I did. Fail video is on Instagram @alhardman No shame in posting fails, that's how we learn. Gonna focus on lighter weights and building my front squat confidence. That's a thing. Front. Squat. Confidence.

Boys actually got a bath tonight too! I'm the best mom around!

My Food
Breakfast: 2 eggs, Lite Latte from Dunkin - oh, and  Cronut #treatyoself
Snack: Ostrim stick, tons of water
Lunch: 3 patty burger from Elevation Burger. No bun. Duh
Dinner: trying to figure out what I want....meat and veggies

WOD

Strength:
1 rep max front squat (previous is 175#)
failed at 180# rough stuff

Conditioning:
21-15-9

pushed hard for 8:30

Did a 1K sprint row and PR'd by 26 seconds! 4:14. Whahoooooo

Terrific Tuesday 3/24

My Day
Woke up a little sore. Stupid run yesterday, amazing how just over a mile of hilly jogging (yep, jogging) can make me so sore. I need to get back into running shape. Right on cue Holly asked if we could do Crain today. You run after each movement.....so that happened. We did 1/2 the workout (supposed to be 2 rounds) and did it at the home gym. I love going to the box, but the home gym allows me more time with family and the boys get to see first hand what I'm up to. It was a ton of fun and we got some good hard work in. My quads feel like jello and I love it!

My Food
Breakfast: eggs, Swiss cheese, mint tea
Snack: chicken salad with nuts
Lunch: barbacoa beef with broccoli
Snack: coffee, Ostrim stick
Dinner: spaghetti squash with Italian sausage

WOD
Crain (2 rounds, we did 1)
34 Push-ups Run, 50 yd 34 Deadlifts, 95 lbs Run, 50 yd 34 Box Jump (20 In.)s Run, 50 yd 34 Clean & Jerks, 65 lbs Run, 50 yd 34 Burpees Run, 50 yd 34 Wall Balls, 20 lbs Run, 50 yd 34 Pull-ups no tears!!!! Run, 50 yd

5K - oh, you are serious?

The weekend started off with a bang! I got home from work mentally exhausted, but was met with a Tequilla shot (thanks Sam!) and a package from Afrobrutality! Syn sent 2 pounds of coffee (black cocaine yumminess), a new tank, and a banner for the home gym (Apt.3B).

Spicy!

Stepping up the garage gym!

Friday night was 15.4 and my mom and bro came to cheer me on. I did the scaled version (123 reps) of push press and cleans (65#/75#). The weight was not heavy for me, which meant I needed to move fast and keep moving. I was pretty proud of my effort and super happy to sport my new Afrobrutality tank.

15.4 fun at Crossfit Annandale

Saturday was an early morning of get up, get dressed, and go! The boys school was doing a Fun Run and they NEEDED to sign up. Last year we didn't do it - it was the same day as my son M's birthday party - and apparently it was social suicide not being there. Sorry dudes. This year I signed us up....somehow Sam managed to get out of it.

Numbers on and ready!

We had to do 4 laps around the school and through the neighborhood. Lots and lots of hills. Turns out that they were serious too - this was a real deal 5K. We jogged most of the first lap, then took the approach of jog the flat and walk the hills. The boys did great, but 3 miles was a lot for them. Today they are both walking around like old men....I might be a LITTLE sore too!

Finish line fun!
Saturday was a beautiful day and Perry loved sunbathing. Doors and windows were open, laundry and spring cleaning were in full force.

Spring!

Ribs for dinner!

Week 2 of meal planning went well. Eggs, pork, asparagus, sausage, fish, sweet potatoes, swiss cheese, Ostrim sticks (yum!). Sunday is prep day for the week so today I will make a list, hit up the grocery store, prep my food and watch Walking Dead (duh).

New Week. New Work.

Been a little bit since I posted....so what have I been up to? Getting some sun at the pool, lifting, crossfitting, and getting ready for summer break! Wahoooooo!!!!

I have also taken some baby steps towards one of my goals: RX competition. I want to be an RX athlete, but I'm not 100% ready. How do you get there? Pushing. Stepping out of your comfort zone. So I heard about a competition through Crossfit Rehoboth. The details: two online WODs, top 20 get invited to the event at their box (hehehe), and $15. Sold.

The first workout was released last week. It was a tough one. 7 minute AMRAP: 15 American kettle bell swings at 24kg (52.9 pounds) and 7 burpee pull ups. I did this workout twice as I just wasn't happy with my first attempt. I knew I could do better. I submitted my second attempt and so far I'm in last place. I'm ok with that. Why? I completed a true RX competition WOD. Period. That was the goal. To be able to participate. Did I think I was going to win? Nope. Did I think I was going to be in the mix as a contender? Not really. The second workout gets posted Wednesday. I am so nervous and excited to see what it is.

One cool thing about this competition is that you can watch the other videos (after they are finalized). So I have watched a few and learned a few tricks and things I can do better. That's what it is all about, right? Getting better? You can't do that by doing the same thing day in and day out. You gotta get scared sometimes, step out of that comfort zone, and test yourself.

I hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine and you are all making some plans to step out of your comfort zone!

Never Have I Ever.....

Been a quitter.

Once I start something I finish it. My mom taught me that. I went through years of asking to do things, join groups and teams to be told "You will finish the season. If you don't like it, then you don't sign back up next year." Done. No negotiating. It was the worst for piano. Ugh. Practicing was torture. I still give my moms piano the stink eye when I see it.

Last night was the first time I felt like quitting during a WOD. It was hard. I was tired. Deadly combination. Hard+Tired = Frustrated. Then I felt the tears coming. Worse than quitting? Ugly cry. Hands down.

The WOD was 15, 10, 5: hang power snatches (65#), high box jumps (24"), and pull ups. My plan was simple. Do 65#, jump 24", and do kipping pull ups. Simple.

NOPE.

I couldn't get my body to move right for the snatch. I got three then failed. The failed again. Then stood there a minute (clock ticking). My husband came over, switched out my weight. Now I'm snatching 53#. I finish the 15 reps and move to the box jumps. No problems there. On to the pull ups. I got three kipping pull ups and just could not get my body up to the bar. Pulled out a band and finished.

Round two. Back to snatches. I hate those things. My form is not good (yet) and I get really frustrated that I can't do them well. I get them up, but it's really really hard. I finish the whole workout - but had to "ask" my husband to leave my line of view. The first round of snatches brought on some tears. I blinked them back - but seeing Sam can sometimes bring on the ugliest of ugly cries.

After the workout I was still upset. I held it together, but frustration mixed with tiredness can be tough. I got in the car, had a quick pity party, had a few friends tell me "it's not always your day", and got over it. Don't get me wrong. I still hate snatches. Snatches and cleans. I need to work on them (more than I do).

So what now? I go back. One workout does not define you. One failure does not define you. I go back because I love it. I go back because I like the challenge. I go back because I'm competitive. I go back because my mom taught me too.

The WOD tonight? Heavy power cleans. Of course it is.

Mindset

Over the last few years I have completely convinced myself that I NEED rest days. Plural. Many. Multiple. I could not possibly do back to back or 6 days a week. I wouldn't be able to move! Apparently in my head I work out like these guys:

Let me clarify. I do not work out like these guys. I promise. Some days it feels like it, but I know in my tired little brain that I don't. Why all the rest then? No clue. I think it was a way for me to feel balanced at first, and then it became a "rule" in my head. As I get more drunk on the Crossfit Kool-aid I need to be working out more days to make the progress that I would like to. Change? Scary, I know! This week Sam and I decided would be our week to add workouts and see if logistically it would work. With work, kids, and life it can get a little busy.

The plan:

Sam: Crossfit 6am class M, T, Th, Fri
         Team Fexy Track Night: Wed

Ann: Crossfit 6pm class M, T, Th, Fri
        Team Fexy Track night: Wed

We can bring the boys to track night and we don't need sitters for the WODs. Pretty great plan. Until.....Yep, Sam got sick. Got a nasty bug Monday. I've been following my plan this week and so far so good. I'm tired, but apparently just life will do that to you.

I've been going strong this week:

Saturday: Olympic lifting seminar (3 hours)
Sunday: Girls on the run 5K
Monday: Crossfit
Tuesday: Crossfit
Wednesday: Track
Thursday: Crossfit - Girls night "Grace"
 Friday: Crossfit (that's the plan)
Saturday: Murph with CFA
Sunday: Rest

I'm doing more stretching and mobility to keep the soreness away. So far so good. Turns out I don't need 3 rest days a week.  Weird, I know. I'm not sure every week will look like a 6 day a week workout, but I can/want/need to do more than 3. It's almost bathing suit season - gotta get toned!

* Funny story - if you have read my blog for a while (thank you), have raced with me, or even know me - you know that I'm not scared of a porta=potty and there are few in the tri-state area that I haven't used. I've stopped at more than one house during a race to use the bathroom if I have too. There was even a squat behind a dumpster moment. Yep. When you gotta go, you gotta go. Sunday was no different. The 5K traffic was terrible and there were no porta potties in site. Solution? Pulled over and went in the bushes. Keeping the tradition alive!

Christine....you B-word

Thursday night was Ladies night. Now, it's not as fun as it sounds (or maybe it is). CFA is doing Thursday Girl WODs. This Thursday was Christine:

3 rounds for time:
500 Meter Row
12 deadlifts at body weight
21 box jumps

I have not done this WOD before, but I thought I could do it Rx which makes me excited and nervous all at the same time. I'm very competitive with myself and always want to do better....but when it's the first time I typically look at what the others girls have done and try and set a goal that way. Lots happening here. Gotta think about good form when rowing and not wasting energy. Deadlifts at body weight (158) is do-able but will be hard. My deadlift max right now is 193. Bring it. Box jumps? My FAVORITE move in crossfit so far.

How did it go? Glad you asked. I warmed up and felt pretty good. I did not warm up the deadlift like I should have. I did a few reps, built up and got to 158. I did that a few times and got ready to start. The timer went off and I rowed my butt off. Got to the bar to dead lift - lifted once and that was it. I didn't fully focus on form and felt it in my back. I didn't know what to do, I tried to lift it again and nothing. Couldn't. I wanted to cry, but sucked it up. I mean, people are watching! My coach and a friend stripped the bar for me down to 103 and I kept going. I finished all three rounds in 14:04. I was very happy with the time, just wish I had been more focused on dead lift form and was able to do it at body weight. There's always next time, right?

Trying not to spend money on clothes, but how can I resist these two shirts?

What's your goat?

At the CFA box (hehehehehe) there is a giant white board with a once real-live goat head on it. What's it for? You write your goals/goats up there. What do you need to work on? What do you want to master? I honestly was nervous to write anything on it for a while. Why? I am still learning to put myself out there and be ok with not reaching a goal quickly or needing to modify that goal. I used to think modify = fail.....now I'm starting to realize that modify = still moving towards that stinkin goal!

So far that board is magic for me. The first thing I wrote on there was double unders. Those elusive bastards. I wrote it up there and worked and worked. One day it clicked and I did one. I couldn't believe it! Instead of erasing it from the board I added the #3 in front of it. That quickly changed to 5, then 10. Last night I did 16 double unders in a row! I could NOT believe it. Crossed that puppy RIGHT off the board.

The second thing I put up there was toes to bar. Thanks to the intensity of the Crossfit Open and wanting to get as many points as possible I got those too! I erased that off the board and have been able to do them in WODs lately. Yeah!

So last night I needed to write a new goal. Having something up there to work towards is really great for me. It helps me focus and work towards something. A friend has a goal to do Annie in sub 10 min. I jumped on her goal and decided now that I have double unders I will work towards that too. It will be my first Girl WOD rx.

“Annie” - for time:
  • 50 double-unders
  • 50 Abmat sit-ups
  • 40 double-unders
  • 40 Abmat sit-ups
  • 30 double-unders
  • 30 Abmat sit-ups
  • 20 double-unders
  • 20 Abmat sit-ups
  • 10 double-unders
  • 10 Abmat sit-ups
Women's CrossFit Annie Repeat Tee Short Sleeve Tops L98185
WHEN I reach this goal I will get this!

Clothing rewards are my favorite....now......food used to be my reward. Bad habit to get in. Great day? Ice cream cone. Awesome workout (no matter how long)? Pizza. You get the idea. No wonder we struggled with weight. Good times = good food = nothing fits. So now we are trying to reward ourselves with a new shirt, going to a Nats game, flowers for the kitchen.....etc. I have to say, it's a lot more fun. We are doing this with the  boys too. If they MUST have a treat it's healthier (fruit leather, baked chips, seaweed crisps) or we hit up the dollar store or 5 below. That place is ALWAYS a hit.

Lately Team Hardman has been all about having fun and keeping healthy and clean. Some days are harder than others but it's totally worth it!

There's no crying in Crossfit.....

At least not until you get to the car. Then you can cry like a baby - which is what I did last night. The last couple of days have been crazy. Nothing terrible has happened, just little things that make you feel like "nothing is going right!". Pity party for one. That was me. I'm sure it sucked for Sam. Hehehehehe.

So, the WOD last night was 3 minutes of back squats, 3 minutes of rowing, 3 minutes of burpees. I was stoked. I really like back squats (my legs are stronger than my arms - duh). I warmed up, no problem. I went to warm up the back squat with just the bar and BOOM. Quads just wouldn't work. I stopped. Stretched. Rolled out. Tried again, just the bar. Nope. Not gonna happen. I talked to my coaches, got some stretching pointers and cheered on my peeps during their squats. I waited until it was my turn to row and do burpees, so at least I got that done.

I felt lame. I felt frustrated. I felt sad. I don't like to be hurt. I really don't like to not do something I'm supposed to. I know this happens, I know this is not the end of the world. It did nicely round out my "nothing is going right" kind of day. Ugh. The worst. I played it cool until I got in the car. I called Sam and let the tears flow. He laughed, talked me through it, made me feel better. What a good guy. I calmed down and pulled my head out of my ass.

Tomorrow is the last day of the Paleo Challenge. I've come far. Read far. I've improved on my benchmarks, I've lost 13 pounds so far, and I feel great (minus last night). I will not let one crappy workout throw me off.

Get in my mouth!

Smash Burger. Lettuce wrapped plus egg, bacon, shrooms, and avocado
Steamed cabbage plus home made pork loin, cilantro, jalapeno sausages
Steaks. Nuff said
Typical breakfast at work. Coffee plus coconut milk, two eggs, collards, bacon, shrooms

I've had some peeps ask what I eat during the day. I make my breakfast at work every morning. I have a toaster oven that I cook my eggs in and I pair it with greens and sometimes shrooms. Lunch is often left overs from the night before - but Smash Burger was Friday for Sam's birthday. It was SOOOOOO good. mmmmmmmmmm. Dinners are 99% Sam's creation. The sausage he made from scratch from a pork loin and was made last minute as a "I could do that....." - God bless the food network. I do snack on baby carrots, a few almonds, raw veggies, and drink TONS of water. All day long. Water water water.

Three nights a week we go to The Box (Crossfit Annandale) and do our workout. The hour is a warm up, a skill set, and then the WOD.  We alternate nights so that we don't have to get babysitters 3 times a week (genius, I know).

We are quickly approaching day 45 in our 60 day challenge. I'm really excited to see all my measurements and body fat changes. I've gone down 11 pounds and one pant size. I'm also fitting into clothes much better than I did before. My energy is up, I'm happy, and things are just rockin. What more can I ask for????

That was hard - now for Crossfit Open Games!

Tuesday night the WOD at CFA almost killed me. Physically it was hard. Mentally it was harder. We had 4 rounds for time:

400 meter run (2 min time cut)
25 kettle bell swings
Double unders

For the double unders you had to be able to do ten consecutive. I cannot. So I did 25 single unders with 5 tuck jumps. Physically I hated the sprint. 400 meters is no joke, then to do the other stuff? I only made it in the 2 minutes for the first two. The worst part? I was short by three seconds the other two times. The absolute worst part? If you don't make the run time, nothing else counts.......but in true crossfit style you still do the workout. No reps counting. Boo. To work that hard was tough. At one point I wanted to cry because I couldn't make the time. But, I kept going and was glad I did.

What's the best thing to do after a hard workout? Sign up for the Crossfit Open Games of course! I did. I was sweating as I pushed the submit button. I'm really excited about it and can't wait to see what it's all about. I know it's 5 weeks with a specific WOD each week. You record your time online, your coach verifies it, then you are ranked among your peers. I'm curious to see where I rank - I'm not going home with the Gold, but that's not what it's about.

I know a lot of people have asked for recipes. Sam does not use recipes, but I'm going to try and see what I can do. We worked last night writing some of them down - hopefully they will be coming soon. Monday will be day 30 on the Paleo Challenge.  30 more days to go - so there will be tons of delicious recipes!

He did make Paleo mayonnaise and salsa Verde. yum!

Learning something new everyday

1. Eating clean = eating at home = running the dishwasher EVERY night

2. I'm down 5 pounds in one week (Hell Yeah!)

3. I did 5 WODs this week and can still walk

4. I cannot stay up past 9pm (falling asleep on the couch is what all the cool people do)

5. Day 4 I almost killed my whole family - if looks could kill.......

6. Day 8 and I am super mom on speed - so much energy!

7. My kids actively watch what I eat and are saying things like "Paleo", "clean", "healthy"

8. I do not NEED sugar, swedish fish, peanut butter, flavored coffee creamer, or bites of my kids food

9. I can make it through a birthday party - decorating cupcakes with ridiculous toppings - and not even sneak a taste.

10. If I'm hungry I eat (clean), if I'm not hungry then I don't eat (duh)

The BEST part? Sam's cooking. He has really stepped it up this week cooking clean clean clean. Jealous? Oh, and he's down 8.8 pounds this week. Stupid boys and their ability to drop weight. grrrrrr

Pan seared Tilapia with cucumber cilantro lime salsa
Filet with Purple cabbage

Pale Challenge Day 2: I'm still alive!

We made it through day 1! Yesterday we went to the Box (hehehehe) and got our measurements, weight, pictures, blood pressure, and fat info - he used a sonograph thingee (technical term) to measure how much fat we actually have on different parts of our body. The results were sad, the graphs were cool, and all the numbers WILL go down.

Now, there is NOTHING like standing in a gym in spandex and a sports bra in the winter time. Brrrr. I had to keep telling myself this is for a good cause - the BEST cause. It's ok that I'm "chubby" now because I'm doing something about it.

The Paleo Challenge rules? Glad you asked:
1. One point each day for doing a WOD or at home workout
2. One point for drinking one gallon of Paleo Fluids (black coffee, water, water, water, water)
3. One point for eating Paleo - put that bite of cake down!

Yesterdays points = 1 for fluid. I did not workout as my back is almost fully recovered. I did not eat Paleo because we went out to eat for Sammy's 6th birthday. We went out for Chinese food - kinda fancy Chinese food. In the past I would have layered my plateS with rice, meat, rice, meat.....tastes so good. Not yesterday. I knew eating there would not count as Paleo (how much sugar is in those sauces????) but I wanted to make better choices. I did not eat ANY rice (easier than I thought). I ate a few JUMBO shrimp and my favorite dish EVER - Seschuan Beef Proper. Tastes like candy. I know it's terrible for me, but whatever. I had a great time, left feeling full and proud.

For dinner last night we had salad and flank steak. Yum! I have it for left overs for lunch today. Snacks are veggies, pepperoni, and guac. My new adventure? Coffee. Gotta figure out how to have some, enjoy it, and make it Paleo. Today I added coconut milk to it. It did not add sweetness, but I did like the creamy texture. Not as yummy as my previous coffee milkshake - but it will work!

Temptations were EVERYWHERE yesterday. Between eating out and the football game I made the choice to walk away from rice, alcohol, chips, cheese dip.......I think I won the battle of Day 1. So far Day 2 has been kind.

I'm so immature.....

Now that I'm done with week 3 of Crossfit I'm feeling like a pro, at least that's what I tell myself when I'm too sore to move and need to get back to being tortured. What has me giggling? Crossfit words. Heheheeheh

Snatch - hehhehehehehe. Makes me giggle every time
Thruster - uh, thrust, thruster, hahahhahah
WOD (pronounced wad) - WOD of what?
Clean and Jerk - again, giggles
Box - I'm too immature to do this.......

Of course when in the zone I try not to let my immaturity show. I keep the giggles in - unless Sam is by me. If  he's close then the giggles tend to be contagious.

We just got back from Super H Mart (Asian grocery store) where we did our Paleo-ish shopping for the week. Tons of veggies, fruit, and meats and spent $108. Pretty excited since our weekly grocery budget was $200 and we've been looking for ways to cut it down. Sundays is also free sample day. It's my fav - who doesn't love to walk around and try free Korean food? It was a little crowded, but totally worth it for the great produce and cheap prices.

I picked up a Naked Coconut water to drink on the way home. I've seen this coconut water floating around so much lately. If you know me I have a slight obsession with coconut. I LURVE it. In everything - lotion, bars, smoothies, chocolate.......yum! One serving has more potassium than a banana - and I've got to think less sugar than one. I did really like it and only 60 calories a box (hehehehehe, there's that word again). They have a few different flavors, but I went Pure for my first tasting. There was mango, Lychee (not even sure what that is), and Pineapple.

I did let my peeps (we've emailed therefore they are my peeps) at Skratch Labs about adding a coconut flavor. I do LOVE their pineapple flavor. It's my new favorite and I love how I don't feel gross drinking it after a really hard workout.

I'm going to try and make my own coconut butter next. Wish me luck!

An early Christmas gift and Skratch Product Review

I got my first gift. Crossfit shoes!
That made getting the WOD done a MUST! I had to show OFF those new kicks. We did the 12 Days of Christmas WOD. It sounded much worse than it was, but the most sweaty I've been after a workout. Glad it's done.

The new kicks are great! They are really comfortable and most importantly they look cool. I'm pretty sure I moved faster today. You can even custom make them - which I will be doing when I need a new pair.

During and after the work out I sipped on Skratch.Last week I drank the Orange flavor and today I chose Raspberry. Now, if you like Gatorade (bleh) or anything else that is syrupy during or after a workout you may need time to get used to Skratch. It's all natural, nothing artificial, with actual fruit flavors. I was initially surprised by the orange because I was expecting that syrupy flavor - but it just tastes like a slice of orange was floating around in there. The drink was actually refreshing and didn't sit heavy in my belly. I have lemon lime and pineapple to try.....I'm pretty intrigued by the pineapple. I wish they had a coconut one (hint hint). Sam and I are trying to be more aware of what we are eating - not so focused on calories, fat, etc....but chemicals. I'm much happier knowing that there is an electrolyte drink out there that is all natural and low in calories that tastes good. Other thing I loved? That they come in single sticks. I often don't have time to deal with the big ol bag of powder....sticks are where it's at. I will be ordering more and I will have to get their cookbook too.

Merry Christmas Eve!
